The difference between highlights that look expensive and highlights that look striped is placement, and placement is a judgement call about your hair and your face rather than a technique you apply the same way every time.
Rene works in foils and freehand depending on what the hair needs. Foils give control and lift where you want brightness concentrated. Balayage is painted on so the color is softest at the root and strongest through the ends, which is what makes the grow-out forgiving.
She also does a lot of gray blending, which is its own thing: rather than covering gray completely every few weeks, the gray gets worked into a lighter overall tone so it reads as dimension instead of roots. For a lot of clients it is the thing that finally gets them off the six-week touch-up cycle.

Highlights and balayage, answered
- What is the difference between highlights and balayage?
- Highlights are woven into foils, which gives precise, concentrated lift. Balayage is painted onto the surface freehand, so it is softer at the root and grows out without a line. Rene uses both, often in the same head.
- How often will I need them redone?
- Foils typically want refreshing every six to eight weeks. Balayage is more forgiving and often stretches to three or four months, which is a large part of why people choose it.
- Can Rene blend my gray instead of covering it?
- Yes, and she does a lot of it. Blending works the gray into a lighter overall tone so it reads as dimension rather than a root line, which means far fewer touch-ups.
- Will highlights damage my hair?
- Any lightening is a chemical process, so condition matters. Rene will assess what your hair can take and adjust how much she lifts, rather than pushing for a shade your hair cannot hold.
